Nagaland’s COVID tally breaches 4000-mark, drastic decline in positivity rates

The COVID-19 cases in Nagaland crossed the 4000-mark, with the confirmation of 53 new infections from the virus on Tuesday, official updates informed.

The total tally of infections in the state now stands at 4,003, on the 100th day after the State reported its first positive cases on May 25. 

According to Twitter updates from Nagaland Minister for Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) S Pangnyu Phom, the state also reported 133 new recoveries—77 from Dimapur, 51 from Kohima, three from Mon and two from Tuensang district.

With this, the total number of recovered cases continues to surpass active cases with 3,191 recoveries against 793 active cases.

Among the new cases, 29 persons were categorized as ‘traced contacts,’ out of which 16 were from Kohima and 13 from Mon.

 Five frontline workers from Kohima were also among the new cases along with eight ‘returnees/travellers,’ according to data provided by the State Nodal Officer, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, H&FW.

Eleven more armed forces personnel—two from Kohima and nine from Dimapur, also tested positive on Tuesday, taking the total number of infections among armed forces personnel to 1,703 or 42% of the total cases in the state. 

Returnees/travellers accounted for 1,268 or 32% while 744 or 19% of the cases were among traced contacts. About 288 or 7% of the cases were detected among frontline workers, as per the IDSP.

As per data available on the Nagaland COVID-19 Dashboard and daily bulletins issued by IDSP, the duration taken to reach the 4000-threshold has increased considerably, indicating a significantly lower positivity rate.

Since the confirmation of first case on May 25, it took 57 days to cross the 1000-mark on July 20; 14 days to cross 2000 cases on August 3; and just seven days to reach the 3000-threshold on August 10.

Thereafter, it took 22 days to cross the 4000-mark on September 1. 

Since May 25, the state recorded eight confirmed COVID-19 deaths with a mortality rate of 0.21%.

According to official data, one death is COVID-19 positive but not due to COVID-19 while three more deaths are under investigation. All deaths reported in the state were from Dimapur. Nine cases are said to have ‘migrated.’
