State Commissioner for PwDs asks media & public to correctly identify feat as a Paralympic win
DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 8 (MExN): Nagaland’s first-ever Paralympic medal, won by Hokato Hotozhe Sema in the Men’s Shot Put F57 Final at the Paris Paralympics 2024, has not only sparked celebrations but also underscored the urgent need for greater support for para-athletes, according to Diethono Nakhro, the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
In a press release, Nakhro emphasized that Sema’s achievement should be seen as a turning point for disability sports in Nagaland and the country at large. While Sema’s Bronze Medal win has already made headlines, Nakhro stressed the broader significance of his success, calling it a “new benchmark” for young disabled athletes. Sema’s victory, she noted, serves as an inspiring example of resilience and determination for the disability sports community.
Nakhro also highlighted the Rs 1.5 crore reward announced by the State Government as a commendable gesture that recognizes Sema’s historic win. "This financial reward underscores the government’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports, particularly among para-athletes," Nakhro said. However, she noted that this moment should also serve as a call for greater inclusivity in sports infrastructure, training, and funding for disabled athletes. "With the right investment in facilities and support, we can cultivate many more world-class competitors like Hokato," she added.
In her statement, Nakhro further urged the public and media outlets to ensure that Sema’s victory is correctly identified as a Paralympic win, not an Olympic one. "The Paralympics is the premier international sporting event for athletes with disabilities, held alongside the Olympics. It’s important to distinguish this from the Olympics, and we kindly request corrections be made where necessary," she said.
As Nagaland celebrates its first Paralympic medal, Nakhro expressed hope that Hokato’s victory will inspire a new generation of para-athletes and drive the state toward becoming a hub for disability sports in India.
