Neichülieü Nikki Haralu laid to rest

The mortal remains of Late Neichülieü Nikki Haralu, (IFS Rtd) was laid to rest today amid mourners from across the state. Her funeral was held at NM Place, Dr. Haralu Colony here on Saturday at 1:00pm.  

Late Neichülieü, the first Naga woman IFS officer and the first Naga woman to hold an ambassadorial post breathed her last on September 2 at the age of 98 years.  

Born to the first Naga medical doctor, Dr. Harielungbe Haralu of Poilwa village, and Rükhrieü of Kohima village, on July 28, 1918, she was the eldest of eight siblings.  

In her illustrious career, she served both the State and the Centre in various capacities and had been a trailblazer in many areas.  

As a diplomat, Neichülieü served in Belgium, Italy, USA, and Sri Lanka before her retirement as Ambassador of India to Panama in 1980.  

At her retirement, she had served for 26 years in the Ministry of External Affairs with an additional charge of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. After her retirement, she came back to Nagaland to serve as Chairperson of Nagaland State Social Welfare Advisory Board (1987-1993).  

The funeral service was led by Pastor Visasier Kevichüsa, while Rev. Balie Kirha was the minister. Gekhotso Haralu read out the obituary.  

The service included tributes from President of Zeliangrong Baudi, Raitu Chawang; Pastor Peuhau of Poilwa village; V. Sekhose on behalf of the colony; and Pastor Khriesito Savino of Grace Covenant Church.  

The funeral rite was administered after speeches by family members and her mortal remains was laid singing the Hymn, ‘The Love of God.’  

Condolence Messages  

Governor: Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya has expressed sadness at the demise of Neichülieü Nikki Haralu, IFS (Rtd.). In a condolence message, Acharya said, “Late Neichülieü Nikki Haralu was a source of inspiration and role model. She proved through her life that Naga women are second to none. She achieved the highest dream/position despite the difficulties during those days.” The Governor further conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members.  

K Therie: Expressing sadness and grief at the passing away of Neichülieü Nikki Haralu, NPCC President, K. Therie attributed her as “a great daughter of Nagaland who excelled and brought recognition for Nagaland. She scaled to the top on her own merit and served humanity on many fronts with excellence.” Therie added, “Her contributions to India in its phase when women in careers faced untold difficulties, will be remembered in history, while her contributions to the Nagas and to Nagaland, stand unparalleled. Her life will continue to be a source of inspiration for many generations to come.” All rank and file of the NPCC further conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.  

Kuhoi Zhimo: Ex-member of Ward-5, Dimapur Municipal Council, Kuhoi Zhimo also expressed shock at the demise of Neichülieü Nikki Haralu. He described her as “a very strong lady, joyful and God fearing who was ahead of her time.” In her death, he stated, “we have lost a source of inspiration, a role model for many and her absence will be felt by all of us.” Kuhoi on behalf of his family offered condolences to the family members and near and dear ones of the deceased.   TSUD: The Tenyimi Students' Union Dimapur (TSUD) has expressed heartfelt condolences at the death of Neichülieü Nikki Haralu, whom it addressed as “our mother”. “Her achievements will always be an example for all of us to emulate,” stated a condolence message from TSUD General Secretary, Azo Wetsah and President, Kedilung Newmai.
