New building of Urban Primary Health Centre inaugurated in Wokha

Wokha, September 20 (MExN): The new building of the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) in Wokha was officially inaugurated today by Dr. Akuo Sorhie, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland. The dedication ceremony began with a prayer led by Chumbenthung Murry, Assistant Pastor of Wokha Town Baptist Church.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sorhie highlighted the significance of the new facility as a milestone in improving healthcare services in the district. "The inauguration of the new UPHC building marks a significant step forward in our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to the people of Wokha district," she said. Dr Sorhie emphasized that the health centre will continue to serve as a vital hub for essential health services, including preventive, promotive, and comprehensive primary care.
Dr Zuchamo Patton, District Programme Officer (HSS) Wokha, delivered the welcome address and expressed hope that the new UPHC, located in Likya Colony at the heart of Wokha town, would greatly benefit those seeking treatment for minor ailments. He welcomed the Mission Director, officials from the Medical Directorate, Renbomo Ezung, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, and other district officials and medical staff to the inaugural programme.

Dr Zubenthung Kikon, Chief Medical Officer, briefed attendees on the history of the UPHC, which was established in 2019. He thanked the medical staff involved in the 2019 headcount survey of Wokha town, which enabled the establishment of the health centre. He also expressed gratitude to Pyobemo Murry, the contractor who donated the land for the new building, as the UPHC had previously operated from a rented space.

Dr Merenenla Senlem, State Programme Officer (NHM), spoke about the role of the UPHC in advancing the concept of Universal Health Coverage under the National Health Policy of 2017 and its importance as a health and wellness centre. She expressed hope that the new facility would help reduce the patient burden on the District Hospital. Dr Vezokholu Theyo, State Programme Officer (NTEP), addressed the gathering on the status of tuberculosis in the district and encouraged the UPHC staff to enhance TB screening and testing services. The programme was chaired by Openthung Kinghen, Consultant, UPHC Wokha, and ended with a vote of thanks from Dr Achumi Kikon, Medical Officer, UPHC Wokha.
