
DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (MExN): A function was held today at Police Complex, Chumukedima to inaugurate the new building of the Nagaland Police Central Hospital. Thenucho, Minister for Home, Veterinary & AH graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. SN Achumi IPS DIG (Trg & Brd) Camp Commandant Chumukedima, chaired the function. The welcome speech was delivered by Dr BK School, CMO PCH. Er. Kahuto Sumi, Project Engineer PEP, in his brief technical report, stated that the building was built with an expenditure of Rs 42.30 lacs under a central scheme for modernization of police forces. It has 2 storeys and provision has been made for further expansion if needed. This building has a capacity of 40 beds and will also hold X-Ray machines and other equipments.
J Changkija IPS DGP Nagaland, in his speech, said that the Police force in Nagaland is mainly occupied with maintaining law and order. and in the line of duty, casualties are expected apart from usual health problems. He hoped that the new building would cater to these problems faced by police personnel. He added that the present strength of the personnel working in the hospital is 14 which also includes 2 doctors. Changkija also broached the subject of HIV/AIDS. He said that 1.62 % of the urban population in Nagaland is suffering from this disease. Thus, even the police force must take steps to counter this problem by raising awareness about this disease starting from the DIGs right down to the jawans. This awareness campaign must also reach out to the unit schools of the police forces.
In his inaugural speech, Thenucho expressed his thankfulness to all those people who had been involved in the construction of the new hospital building. He informed that the death of jawans due to sicknesses is greater than death in the line of duty. He stressed on the importance of maintaining good health. However, he rued the fact that there are no trauma centres to take care of a jawan’s psychological as well as mental needs.
He said that the rate of blood donation and collection is still floundering in Nagaland and to this, stressed on the need to collect blood and store it for medical purposes. Since police profession is one that leads by example, he added that that death by excessive drinking and chewing tobacco is one that does not go well with the uniform. “It is not the buildings but the medical system that needs to be revamped” he said.
Thenucho concluded his speech by saying that the police force in Nagaland is dealing with a complex situation which includes political problems at hand. As the Home Minister of the state, he said that he does not desire infightings that are taking place among the various factions. “Why kill among ourselves? Whether any faction, public individual or police personnel dies…..each one is a Naga.”
