Guwahati, September 24 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has collected Rs 34.06 crore from ticketless or irregular ticket passengers during the period from April to September 22, 2024.
According to an official release, during the special drive, a total of 396,101 cases of ticketless or irregular ticket passengers were detected, leading to the realisation of fare and penalties from offenders amounting to over Rs 34 crore. During the corresponding period in the previous financial year, the fare and penalties amounted to around Rs 33.78 crore from 394,076 detected cases, it added.
The current status signifies 0.51% more cases and 0.82% higher earnings compared to the previous year. In addition, from April to August of the current 2024-25 financial year, three surprise ticket checking drives against unauthorised passengers were carried out with the assistance of railway magistrates to detect passengers travelling without proper journey tickets.
During the drives, the magistrates prosecuted 167 persons, and 161 persons found violating the Railway Act were fined, the release said. The total amount procured from the three checks has been `10.58 crore, it added.
According to the NFR, regular intensive ticket checking drives are conducted to ensure hassle-free, comfortable travel and better services for all bona fide passengers. Meanwhile, it noted that travelling without a proper ticket or beyond the authorised distance may lead to the levy of excess charges and fares.
In case of failure or refusal to pay such fines on demand, passengers can be prosecuted under relevant sections of The Railways Act, 1989, it cautioned. Accordingly, the NFR appealed to the general public to travel with proper and valid tickets as well as carry valid identity cards to avoid inconvenience.
Passengers can also purchase unreserved tickets from one part of the country to another through the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile application on their smartphones, which can be downloaded from both Android and Apple app stores, it added
