NFR signs MoUs with IIT Guwahati for technological advancements

MALIGAON, NOVEMBER 19 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG), focusing on technological advancements aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability in railway operations.

The MoUs were signed at a ceremony held at IIT Guwahati, attended by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, along with senior railway officials, and IIT Guwahati Director, Prof Devendra Jalihal, faculty members, and delegates.

The collaboration covers a range of projects designed to address key operational challenges faced by NFR in the Northeast region, a press release issued by CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated on Tuesday.

The first MoU focuses on developing a high-speed camera system to detect broken and unbroken seals in cargo trains. This technology aims to improve security and prevent pilferage during transportation. The second MoU involves the creation of a face recognition and alert system to monitor and notify authorities about potential criminal activities, contributing to passenger safety.

The third MoU addresses the alarm chain pulling mechanism in trains, proposing a real-time alert system to reduce operational disruptions caused by pressure drops and emergency recreations. The fourth MoU aims to develop Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) and Solid Waste Management Systems for railway colonies, depots, and premises, helping to promote cleaner and more sustainable environments within railway facilities.

This partnership between NFR and IIT Guwahati is expected to contribute to more efficient and safer railway operations in the region. By leveraging technological solutions developed by IIT Guwahati, these initiatives will address some of the region’s unique challenges and improve the overall functioning of the railway system.

The signing ceremony also featured presentations by IIT Guwahati faculty, outlining their research and how it can be applied to the needs of NFR. These efforts reflect a shared commitment to improving railway services through practical and innovative technological solutions.
