Dimapur, November 15 (MExN): A hands-on training session titled, “Banana Fiber Extraction, its value addition & Vermi-composting” was held in Pukhato Village, Kuhuboto Block, Niuland district on November 13.

The STINER-TFC, NU-SAS, Medziphema Campus, in collaboration with FPOs promoted by Entrepreneurs Associates under NERAMAC, organised the training as an initiative towards sustainable agriculture and eco-friendly practices.

According to a press release, the training brought together 41 participants from diverse backgrounds. Chairing the introductory programme, Prof Akali Sema highlighted the role and objectives of STINER-TFC in creating an entrepreneurial mindset among the people and the various ways through which it can intervene in developing the rural mass.

In his opening remarks, Khosato H Keyho, CEO, FBO Dhansiripar block, expressed his gratitude to STINER for their concern and enthusiasm towards the people and their well-being. The chairman of Pukhato village, Akhievi, also encouraged the participants, especially the women, to learn various skills and knowledge and implement them in their lives.

Speaking on the scope and utility of the banana plant and vermicompost, Project Assistant, STINER-TFC Bikram Ghimere delved into the intricacies of the banana as a plant and the various steps from which fibres are extracted from the banana pseudostem. He also stressed the importance and scope of vermicomposting in converting household and farm wastes into successful home-based income-generating avenues. This activity can be highly integrated with banana fibre extraction as wastes from extracted fibres can be utilised as biomass, which can be converted into income-generating high-quality compost, he highlighted.

The programme was followed by a technical session on banana fibre extraction and its value addition, where Vibito Savino, MTS, STINER-TFC, gave a step-wise practical demonstration of the procedure involved in extraction and the value addition. A practical-oriented session on vermicomposting was also conducted by Ghimere, including the procedure involved in making vermicompost.
