Phek, June 20 (MExN): As part of the nationwide observance of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) and in preparation for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Elpis Society, Phek, in collaboration with the District Administration and Department of Social Welfare, organised a sensitization and awareness programme on drug and alcohol abuse at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Phek on June 18.

Delivering the keynote address, Velato Nienu, MnE DISHA Phek, highlighted the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and stressed the importance of building a drug-free society through awareness, prevention, and collective community action.

Drawing from his personal journey as a recovering addict, he shared a powerful testimony on the devastating impact of drug and alcohol addiction and urged the students to make responsible life choices and stay away from substance abuse.

He further spoke on the stigma and discrimination faced by recovering addicts and emphasized that addiction is a disease requiring compassion, treatment, rehabilitation, and social support. He encouraged students to support individuals seeking recovery and help them reintegrate into society with dignity and hope.

The technical session was conducted by Hierhotho Kajiri, DIS, DISHA Phek, who delivered an informative presentation on the causes, effects, and consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Through a PowerPoint presentation, he highlighted the physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts of substance abuse and discussed preventive strategies for young people.

During the administration of Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge, the participants reaffirmed their commitment to remain free from drugs and alcohol and to contribute towards building a healthier and safer society.

The programme was chaired by Zavekhoyi P. Vadeo, PGT, GHSS Phek while Shekunelu and Nuvekulu, Vice President of Elpis Society pronounced invocation and benediction prayer respectively.

Approximately 300 students and faculty members attended the programme.

The campaign sensitized participants on the dangers of substance abuse, promoted healthy lifestyle choices, and reinforced the importance of compassion and support for individuals affected by addiction.

The participants reflected the collective commitment towards realizing the vision of a Drug-Free India under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
