NMWO conducts awareness programme on substance abuse and HIV/STI at New Market

The New Market Women Organization (NMWO) in collaboration with Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) today conducted an awareness and sensitization programme on “Substance abuse & HIV/STI” at New Market (Ser) Panchayat Hall, Kohima.

Talking on the topic on "Gateway Drugs & Substance Abuse" Renbo, Project Manager, Kripa Foundation, Nagaland, said that drug abuse can lead to serious health problems such a cardiovascular issues, respiratory problems, liver disease and neurological damage.

It often exacerbates or triggers mental health disorders like depression, anxiety and psychosis, he said adding that it strains relationships with family and friends due to erratic behaviour, neglect and distrust.

“Performance at work or in school may deteriorate, leading to unemployment or academic career,” he added.

On legal issues, he said that involvement in criminal activities such as theft or drug trafficking to support addiction can lead to legal consequences.

On financial impact, he said that it would result significant financial strain due to expenditure on drugs and potential of loss of income from unemployment or legal fees.

High risk of overdose, especially with opioid abuse, which can result in death, he added.

Renbo also highlighted the primary prevention and strategies.

Talking on the topic “Basics of HIV/STI,” Ainato Yeptho, Deputy Director, NSACS said that treatment is available to prolong the life of an HIV infected person.

For any signs and symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), seek medical treatment without delay and visit the nearest STI/ RTI clinic and consult the doctor immediately and also avail free testing and medication in the govt hospitals and Suraksha clinic.

Yeptho said that STI increases the risk of acquiring HIV infection, adding that untreated STIs can cause serious problems like chronic ill health disability and even increase the risk of getting cancer.

KP Ezung, Assistant Director, Kripa Foundation talked on “Disease concept,” while Dr KPA Ilyas, IPS DIG, CID Police Headquarters, Kohima and Dr Deli Rhezhii, CMO, Central Health Services, Kohima talked on “Drugs and the Law” and “Clinical aspect of Substance Abuse" respectively.
