No cause justifies forced recruitment of youths: NSO

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 23 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Organisation (NSO) has issued a rejoinder to the open press statement released by the Kachin Wesean Students Association (KWSA) on August 11, welcoming its concerns on issues affecting both the Kachin and Naga peoples.

In the statement, the NSO expressed gratitude to the KWSA for recognising the injustices faced by innocent Naga civilians at the hands of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its allied forces, terming the acknowledgment “an important step toward ensuring accountability and justice.”

The NSO said it shares the conviction that all movements must uphold the principles of human rights and dignity, stressing that peaceful dialogue and mutual respect remain the most viable path for addressing differences and strengthening fraternity in the struggle for freedom and justice.

Reiterating its consistent opposition to forced recruitment, the NSO said it has rejected such practices “whether carried out by the NSCN-K (YA), NSCN-K (AM), or the Myanmar military junta.” The statement underlined that “no revolutionary cause can justify the coercion of youths into armed service against their will.”

The NSO reaffirmed its mission to safeguard the welfare of Naga students and communities, stating that its foremost responsibility is to ensure their safety, dignity and future as contributing members of society.

Calling upon the KWSA to convey its concerns to the leadership of the KIO/KIA, the NSO said it is necessary to refrain from escalating tensions by engaging in “unscrupulous activities” against Naga civilians. “These actions risk undermining the very bonds of solidarity our peoples have built over generations of shared struggle,” the statement said.

The NSO further urged the KIO/KIA leadership to abandon divisive policies “influenced by outside powers, including India,” and instead work toward a relationship based on trust, respect and partnership within the revolutionary fraternity.

“The NSO reiterates its commitment to justice, human rights, and solidarity with the Kachin people. Only through sincere dialogue and principled cooperation can we preserve the spirit of fraternity that has long bound our two peoples together,” it added.
