DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 25 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has condemned the alleged physical assault on a nursing student at the District Hospital Dimapur on February 24, describing it as a serious incident that underscores ongoing safety concerns for women in the state.
In a press statement, the NSCW highlighted the failure of security measures at workplaces, particularly in relation to the safety of women, and pointed out the lack of adherence to legal provisions meant to prevent harassment. The Commission emphasized that despite multiple reminders regarding the implementation of the Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, cases of harassment remain high in Nagaland.
The NSCW has urged both government and private sector stakeholders to take immediate action to establish Internal Complaints Committees and Grievance Redressal Officers, ensuring that complaints are addressed in a timely manner.
The Commission also demanded for a swift and thorough investigation into the incident, along with appropriate legal action against the perpetrator. It further stressed the need to strengthen workplace security to prevent such attacks, asserting that the safety of women and girls must be prioritized.
In response to the assault, the NSCW said it has taken suo-motu cognizance of the case and intends to pursue the matter as a priority. The Commission has also called on state authorities to take necessary legal action in accordance with the law.
