DIMAPUR, JANUARY 6 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) today informed that it would organise and impose the total bandh called by the North East Students Organisation (NESO) within its jurisdiction on January 8 from 5:00am to 4:00pm.
The protest has been called in protest against the central government’s move to implement the Citizenship (Amendment Bill) 2016.
It directed all federating units and sub-ordinate bodies to enforce the bandh in their respective jurisdictions.
For Dimapur, the NSF informed that a high powered committee in coordination with federating units would be responsible to enforce the bandh. The High Power Committee (HPC) was appointed in May last year after the Dimapur Naga Students Union went defunct.
Further, the federation called upon all civil society, business community and the public to co-operate with the bandh. The NSF informed that exemptions from the purview of the bandh include press and media, medical, administration, police, para military, pre-engaged programs like wedding, conventions & conferences (Should possess card & programme copy, and students moving back to their places of study (Should possess copy of tickets for their journey).
A press note from the NSF President, Kesosul Christopher Ltu and General Secretary, Imtiyapang Imsong informed that the NSF as a constituent unit of NESO has consistently and vigorously appraised and appealed the Government of India on the bill and its “detrimental effect if the bill is passed and the crisis arising out of the unabated influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, which has brought about serious damage and challenges to the indigenous people of the North East region.”
“The Naga Students’ Federation Strongly condemns the announcement made by the Prime Minister of India to table the said controversial Bill and further get it passed soon. Further, the federation warns the GoI that they must not gamble with the future of the indigenous people of NE,” it said.
The Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) meanwhile said that it will impose the bandh within its jurisdiction as per the NSF directive. The CSU appealed the district administration, law enforcing agencies, business establishments and all school and college's to remain closed for the said bandh.
