Rampant practices of back-door appointments and other undesirable practices have been adopted by those in the seat of power during the recruitment process to various government jobs, alleges NSF

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 21 (MExN): The Naga Students Federation (NSF) today stated that it would carry out a series of democratic protests expressing discontent at the Nagaland Government’s apparent failure to address the former’s demands on the setting up of a Staff Selection Board (SSB) for the state.

A press release from the NSF media cell stated that rampant practices of back-door appointments and other undesirable practices have been adopted by those in the seat of power during the recruitment process to various government jobs.

“Meritocracy has been living its dark days in the state, counting very little of the efforts and sacrifices made by the students to secure a future for themselves and the society at large.  This situation needs to be remedied without further delay,” it said.

The NSF reminded that it had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio on June 11 urging his government to set up a committee which will work out the modalities for setting-up of the SSB in the state within two months time.

When no positive development to the effect was witnessed, the federation issued an ultimatum to the government on August 21. It demanded that the government issue notifications banning all recruitment to ‘Group C’ posts until the implementation of SSB; scrap all departmental exams for recruitment to ‘Group C’ posts; and set up an SSB with all existing vacancies filled through open recruitment.

The federation’s draft policy and modalities in tune with the already implemented states was also submitted to the Nagaland Government. The NSF has urged that these demands be addressed within a period of a month, with the caution that failure to do so would compel it to undertake action.

The NSF however lamented that despite more than a month since that ultimatum was placed, no positive action has been forthcoming. “We’ve not been able to make much headway in our pursuit as the state government has not been forthcoming to hammer out a solution in tune with the aspirations of the Naga students and youths,” the NSF revealed.

Stating that this has compelled the federation to begin a series of “democratic mass based protests” (details to be informed publicly later), the NSF appealed to all “right thinking Naga citizens to come forward and lend your support.”

It further appealed all to “tell the state government that the Naga youths and students shall no longer accept practices that are responsible for the stunted growth of our Naga society.”
