A breakaway of the Yung Aung-led NSCN (K), Lt Gen (retired) Nyemlang Konyak surrendered to the security forces on the Indian side of the India-Myanmar border. According to official reports, Nyemlang, and his subordinates handed themselves over to the Assam Rifles somewhere in Mon district on September 22.

There was no official update from authorities on the Indian side, but sources citing credible inputs, informed that Nyemlang and a few other cadres crossed over into Nagaland today. “Let them come out with a statement. But there is report that they handed themselves in to the security forces,” said one of the sources.

The location was not specified but the sources said that he and his subordinates were placed under protective custody.

They also surrendered some arms, ammunition and communication sets to the Assam Rifles, the reports said.

The sources said that the surrender would pave the way for Nyemlang, who hails from Mon, to join the political dialogue with the Government of India, while adding that he would likely side with the NSCN (R), which is part of the Working Committee of the NNPGs now in talks with the GoI.

Meanwhile, there was a report that members of Nyemlang’s breakaway group, Gen Niki Sumi and Kilonser Starson Lamkang were captured by Myanmar government forces. This report, however, could not be verified.
