The International Red Cross Day was observed at the Deputy Commissioner’s Hall, Zunheboto, on May 8 under the theme ‘On the Side of Humanity.’
Dharam Raj, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Zunheboto and President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Zunheboto Branch, highlighted the significance of the day. He emphasised that the Red Cross began as an international voluntary service providing aid during wartime but has evolved into a global humanitarian movement offering services and relief even in peacetime. He noted that the Red Cross Society was established in India in 1920.
He further explained the significance of the Red Cross symbol, which is so universally recognized that even hospitals adopt it. He stated that the movement has survived for more than 150 years and is open to all, free of cost. The IRCS promotes humanitarian values, equality, and aims to make the world a better place for everyone.
Dr Akaho Sema delivered a short speech in which he highlighted the society’s recent activities. These included plantation drives, distribution of rations to the needy and underprivileged, and organizing medical camps in remote areas despite limited resources. He also urged for increased mobilization of volunteers, noting the current shortage of active and dedicated members.
Earlier, Dr Antoly, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Zunheboto, chaired the event. She encouraged student participation, stressing that the movement is unique in its collaboration between the government and the public.
The event began with an invocation by Dr Hutton Achumi, Pastor of Sumi Baptist Church, Zunheboto. Kashito Yepthomi, Honorary Secretary of the IRCS Zunheboto Branch, delivered the vote of thanks. He acknowledged that the Sumi community is known for both its warrior spirit and love for peace. He also announced the selection of four institutions to be part of the Youth Red Cross Society in Zunheboto: Zunheboto Government College, Government Higher Secondary School, Cornerstone Higher Secondary School, and Immanuel Higher Secondary School.
