Outcry over Manipur incident continues

DIMAPUR, JULY 22 (MExN): Condemnations of the incident in Manipur where two women were paraded naked and abused, the video of which went viral recently, continued to pour in as several organizations called for justice to the victims and measures to bring peace and stability in Manipur. 

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) appealed to the Government of India to not only take the highest possible action against the perpetrators of these crime against humanity but to take concrete steps to rebuild the confidence of the people and also ensure that order is restored. The NDPP said that it shares the pain and the grief of those innocent women and the people of Manipur, adding that it would extend any support if needed towards achieving the goal of restoring normalcy. 

The Nagaland Gaonburah (Village Chiefs) Federation said that what is happening in Manipur is a dangerous trend “that could spread like wildfire in other parts of India.” It looks like our nation has completely failed in maintaining law and order. Heads of the governing bodies are shying away from their responsibilities, it lamented. Any government failing to protect women, children and minority have no right to remain in power, the federation said.

The Zeliangrong Youth Organization Nagaland sought immediate intervention into the crimes and violence against women in Manipur. It said that “our Zeliangrong brothers were tortured physically time and again in different district of the Manipur; it is loud and clear that it was not an issues of mis- identification but an intentional and a direct challenge to the Zeliangrong community.” It appealed to the Government of Manipur, law enforcement agencies and judicial system in Manipur conduct a thorough investigation to identify the culprit and bring them to justice. 

The Mao Hoho Nagaland called upon every right thinking citizen to rise to the occasion in ensuring that “we leave no stone unturned to see that the cry for justice of humanity which we all have sincerely felt is delivered and quickly.” It meanwhile questioned why the Central Government and the Prime Minister are conspicuously silent on these horrifying incidents of violence and crime in Manipur.

The Watsu Mungdang stated that the “horrific and gruesome act makes words fail and no objective to even begin to describe the inhumanity that was on the parade.” “The power holders, star anchors, TV media had all miserably failed the public,” it stated, while urging the Central Government, State Government and National Commission for Women to take cognizance of the offence and take all necessary measures to bring justice.

The Christian Forum Dimapur (CFD) said that such acts of sexual violence are not only deplorable but also a grave violation of human rights and dignity. While urging authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter and ensure that the perpetrators face the full force of the law, the CFD urged people to come together as a community, offering support and solidarity to those affected with conflicts in Manipur. 

The Assemblies of God of East India condemned the heinous crime and urged the law enforcing agencies to deal with the culprits in the strongest possible manner. It further condemned the “threat and attacks on Christian minorities where many churches were torched down and many Christian’s targeted.” Every citizen irrespective of one’s religion should be respected and protected, it asserted and asked authorities to provide a conducive environment of equality for all of its citizens. 

The Rongmei Phwam Delhi (RPD/Rongmei Council Delhi NCR) and Rongmei Chamnac Phwam Delhi (RCPD/Rongmei Students’ Organization Delhi) said that such incidents are not only morally reprehensible but also constitute a clear violation of fundamental human rights and dignity. The organizations appealed for immediate end to violence and speedy restoration of peace and normalcy in the state. 

The Naga National Council (Parent Body) condemned the “barbaric and heinous crime” and said that this is a vicious crime not only against women folk but against humanity at large. It alleged that “religious motives and agenda drove these systematic and planned operations.” It appealed to “all the Christians in the Northeast region and the world at large to unite and stand together to overcome these tough and challenging persecutions in this part of the world.”

The Norther Angami Women Organisation said that it is “profoundly dismayed and outraged by the heinous and inhuman act towards the crime in the strongest possible terms.” “The pain and suffering experienced by the survivor, the family and the community at large are indescribable. No one should ever have to endure a harrowing violation of their rights, dignity and autonomy,” it stated and called upon law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and arrest the perpetrator(s) at the earliest.
