Patkai, March 1 (MExN): The Science community of Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) organised a seminar on the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Gobal Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat” at Bundrock Auditorium on February 28.

In the keynote address, Prof L Daiho, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema, as the guest of honour discussed the growing concern of plastic pollution in the environment, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and action to reduce it.  He explained that microorganisms take years to decompose plastic, and plastic waste continues to wreak havoc on ecosystems. “If the current rate of plastic pollution continues, it is predicted that, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.”

He also pointed out that plastic bags alone kill approximately 100,000 animals annually, and because plastic cannot be digested, it remains in the animal’s body even after the animal decomposes.
Prof Daiho suggested various ways to tackle plastic pollution, including avoiding single-use plastics and opting for reusable alternatives such as cotton bags and steel utensils. He also mentioned that plastic can be repurposed in the production of bricks and asphalt for road construction. In conclusion, he urged everyone to actively contribute to reducing plastic pollution for the betterment of the environment.

In the second session, the Science students engaged in speech, poster and quiz competitions.

Earlier, Dr R Peseyie, Vice Principal, PCC (A) delivered the welcome address.
