The Margaret Shishak School of Music (MSSM) at Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) held its annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Concert on December 3.
The Christmas Tree Lighting & Prayer were conducted by Rev Zhabu Terhüja, Pastor of Baptist Church A, Medziphema Town.
During the event, various performances took place, including those by the Guitar Ensemble, Handchimes, Recorder Ensemble, String Ensemble, Patkai High School Ensemble, MSSM Singers, and MSSM Chorus.
True to its established reputation, the concert presented a diverse range of musical pieces, encompassing enthralling recitals and captivating vocal performances.
The programmr featured selections such as ‘Prelude The First Noel (piano); Away in a Manger (Handchimes Ensemble); Fox Trot (Patkai High School Ensemble); Rumanian Folk Dances & Tango (String Ensemble); Pie Jesu from Requiem (soprano); Guitar Quartet, and more others. The enthralling evening concluded with the MSSM Chorus rendition of “Silent Night.”
As per the school’s account, the tradition of the Annual Christmas Concert at PCC dates back to December 14, 1975, originally called the “Christmas Carol Service” and organised by the late Margaret Shishak, the founder of the MSSM.
These services initially included piano solos, choir music, and Christmas hymns sung by the congregation.
As the music department expanded, the repertoire also grew, incorporating different instruments such as the guitar, violin, and organ alongside the piano, according to the MSSM.
Today, the department has expanded to include string instruments like the cello and viola, as well as other instrumental ensembles like the recorders and handchimes.
In 2018, the MSSM introduced a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, a tradition observed worldwide to symbolise the coming of Christ, the Light of the World, into a world filled with darkness. This ceremony was later combined with the Christmas Concert.
