Kohima | June 7: Minister for Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Dr. Ngangshi K. Ao today stated that the department has drawn a road map with a vision to reach safe drinking water to all villages in the state.
The minister asserted that the responsibility lies with the department to achieve such goal.
In keeping with the department’s declaration during the formation of DAN ministry, the minister said the department will ensure that it provides not only water but potable water to the people of the state. The department is still pursuing it.
Speaking at the 3 week long orientation and capacity building training for WSSO/DWSM Consultants/Chemists here at the PHED Conference hall, the minister said all districts will have water testing facility soon. The minister challenged the recruited team of Water & Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO) DWSM/Chemists to use their creativity and mind and do something for the state of Nagaland.
Stating that the department expects a lot from them, he encouraged the consultants and chemists to take the job as a challenging one and display their creativity and action which would in turn benefit the society.
Maintaining the PHE as an important department as well challenging, the minister however said the PHE and Power department receives maximum complaint from the public as it deal with the most important factor of public utility and admitted that sometime failure were there. These two departments give maximum help to the people, he added.
Elaborating on the importance of water, the minister also stated that no civilization would flourish or exist without water. Expressing his apprehension that water will be very scarce in the near future, he called upon the consultants/chemists to think together and work out as to how to address and sustain water. He observed that management of water is our responsibility.
Dr. Ao also released a drama film on Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) prepared by WSSO in three Naga dialects (Tenyidie, Ao and Sumi) including Nagamese. The film aims to create awareness to the public on proper sanitary system in the state. Zhaleo Rio, IAS, secretary PHED in his speech also welcomed the consultants to the PHED fraternity and look forward their sincere effort and commitment in helping the people and also to take the department forward. He called upon them to render their best service to the people.
Stating that IEC campaign plays a major role in creating awareness, the secretary also called upon them to share their knowledge with the rural people and also willingness to serve the villagers.
Work for the rural people as they are our targeted people, he urged the consultants. Rio also asserted that the PHED focuses on water quality as quality life depend on water quality.
Er. Mhondamo Ovung, Chief Engineer PHED talked on the ongoing efforts of PHED for achieving sustainable water and sanitation systems in the state. Er. Ovung said the department has so far covered 1062 villages out of 1386 villages, adding that the department will now address 167 quality affected villages/habitations in the state.
Er. Kevisekho Kruse, director, WSSO, PHED said the 3 week long training programme has been designed to build capacity to WWSO/DWSM consultants.
He was hopeful that they will be well equipped after the completion of the training programme.
Field visit, field exercise and theory class are also part of the training programme.
Earlier, welcome speech was delivered by Er. K.G. Sumi, additional CE, PHED while Er. Walter Longchar, SE (M&I) proposed vote of thanks.
Among the many topics to be covered at the training programme include; water quality, total sanitation campaign and triggering, communitization of WS & sanitation, importance of sanitation for good community, flagship programmes related to rural development, management of ground water and water quality, solid & liquid waste management, hydrological cycle and water supply system, RTI Act, etc etc.
