Photography Day observed at NU

Lumami, August 20 (MExN): The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Nagaland University, observed World Photography Day by organising a photography competition and exhibition at the university’s administrative block on August 19.

Guest speaker Anutosh Deb delivered a presentation on “Past, Present and Future of Photography,” tracing the evolution of photography from early cameras and film to digital cameras and smartphones. He also highlighted how technological advancements and social media have transformed photography and expanded its influence on society.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Jagadish Kumar Patnaik spoke about the growing importance of photography as a tool of communication and its ability to influence public opinion. He noted that photography has evolved from traditional cameras to smartphones and social media, while continuing to play an important role in preserving history, documenting society and bringing stories to the public.

In his welcome address, Assistant Professor Dr Arjun Das highlighted photography as a powerful medium of visual storytelling. He said photography preserves memories, documents history, creates social awareness and influences public opinion. He also stressed the need for photography to be used ethically and responsibly.

While declaring the winners of the photography competition, Nagaland University PRO Peter Ki referred to the iconic “Napalm Girl” photograph from the Vietnam War to illustrate the power of visual imagery. He said the photograph, which depicted the suffering caused by the war, had a significant impact on American public opinion. “Photography is not merely a form of art,” he said, adding that it can influence society, raise awareness and contribute to meaningful change.

The formal programme was followed by a photography exhibition inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof J.K. Patnaik. Deans, statutory officers, heads of departments, faculty members, administrative officers, students and other guests attended the programme.
