Phek, February 20 (MExN): An awareness programme on ‘plant genetic resources conservation and biodiversity fair’ was organised under NEH sub-plan by ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra Phek at Porba on February 19.
Altogether 100 farmers from K.Basa, Chozuba, Phek, Zelome, Upper Khomi, Pfutseromi, Porba and Khezakeno villages participated in the programme, stated a press release received here.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head welcomed the participants and briefed on plant genetic resources and protection of plant varieties and farmers right act.
The resource person Dr DP Semwal, Principal Scientist from ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, spoke on the importance of plant genetic resources conservation and encouraged the farmers to conserve the indigenous germplasms.
Dr Soyimchiten Longkumer, Scientist, ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, elaborated the horticultural resources of Nagaland. Dr Hannah K Asangla, CTO (Agronomy), KVK Phek, presented on the importance of community seed bank. Dr T Esther Longkumer, CTO (Soil Science) KVK Phek, highlighted on the recent agricultural technologies and also briefed about the potential crops and enterprises of the district.
The programme was followed by an interactive session and various farming inputs were distributed to all the farmers under the NEH sub-plan. An exhibition of plant biodiversity was also displayed by the farmers. A word of appreciation was delivered by Er Nukusa T Vadeo, Technical officer KVK Phek.
Chepoketa: An awareness programme on ‘Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Biodiversity Fair’ under NEH Sub-Plan took place in Chepoketa, Phek on February 20. It was organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR), New Delhi, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head provided insights into plant genetic resources and the protection afforded through the Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act. Resource person Dr DP Semwal, Principal Scientist from ICAR-NBPGR, emphasised the significance of conserving plant genetic resources and urged local farmers to conserve their native plant germplasm. Dr Soyimchiten Longkumer, Scientist at ICAR-NBPGR, shared information regarding the horticultural genetic resources of Nagaland. Dr Hannah K Asangla, Chief Technology Officer (CTO – Agronomy) at KVK Phek, discussed the importance of community seed banks.
An interactive session ensued, during which various farming inputs were distributed among participating farmers as part of the North Eastern Hill Region (NEH) Sub Plan initiative.
An exhibit showcasing plant biodiversity was also put forth by local farmers.
Er Nukusa T Vadeo, Technical Officer at KVK Phek, offered words of gratitude towards the event organizers and speakers. In total, 100 farmers from Chepoketa and Phek attended the programme.
