Newmai News Network Imphal | February 13 Protesters in Tamenglong district headquarters burnt effigy of Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam to highlight the “backwardness of the district and government neglect for a long time.” All shops remained closed in Tamenglong district headquarters as a mark of protest against the visit by Gaikhangam to the district where he filed his nomination paper for the ensuing Manipur assembly polls. He will contest the ensuing two-phase Manipur assembly polls from Nungba constituency which he won in the last assembly election. A large number of people gathered at the district headquarters market where his effigy was burnt in protest. Deputy CM Gaikhangam filed his nomination in the Deputy Commissioner office. The police took up strong measures to avoid any untoward incident during the visit of Gaikhangam. BJP strongman and former state unit president Thounaojam Chaoba Singh filed nomination to contest the election from Nambol constituency. INC candidate and Social Welfare minister AK Mirabai Devi also filed her nomination to join the fray from Patsoi constituency. Several other candidates such as INC candidate Laishom Ibomcha Singh, BJP candidate Dr Sapamm Ranjan Singh and Rural Development minister Moirangthem OKendro Singh also filed nomination papers. “The Congress will secure all 10 seats in Thoubal district in this election. The party will get absolute majority in the coming polls,” Okendro told mediapersons after filing the nomination. Javadekar confident of BJP winning Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar today expressed confidence that BJP would form the next ministry in Manipur after the assembly polls in the state. He was addressing a political party meeting at the residence of BJP candidate Thounaojam Chaoba Singh at Utlou of Bishnupur district. Javadekar said the Congress government headed by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was “neck deep in corruption” and assured that all corrupt leaders including Ibobi Singh will be sent to prison. The Union Minister was confident of BJP forming the next ministry on March 12. Manipur goes to poll for the 60 seats in two phases on March 4 and 8. The election results will be out on March 11. “The Congress rules under divisive policies while the BJP government gives thrust on development and unity,” Javadekar claimed. Thounaojam Chaoba, who is the convenor of state BJP election management committee, said his long time desire and promise were to completely oust Congress in the state polls.
