Rally in Mizoram on January 23 against Citizenship Bill

The Mizoram’s apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), will organise a state-wide public rally on January 23 to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.


MZP general secretary, Lalnunmawia Pautu said that the decision was taken based on the instruction of North Eastern Students’ Organisation (NESO) to organize public rally by each constituent members in their respective states before January 30 against the controversial Bill.


“The executive meeting of MZP held on Friday agreed to hold a public rally across the state on January 23 against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and instructed all its affiliated student bodies to organise the same in their respective areas,” Pautu said.


He also said that the effigies of the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister would be burnt during the rally. The student body also instructed all its sub-headquarters, branches and affiliated bodies to strictly observe the rally in their respective areas.


There are eight student bodies affiliated to MZP- Mara Students' Organisation (MSO), Lai Students' Association (LSA), Siamsimpawlpi (SSPP), Hmar Students' Association (HSA), Mizoram Bawm Students' Association (MBSA), Ranglong Student' Union (RSU), Pang Zirlai Pawl (PZP) and Thado Kuki Students' Union (TKSU).


The MZP appealed to the people and students to extend their supports and take part at the public rally.


Meanwhile, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) said it will write to the Rajya Sabha chairman against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.


A statement issued by the anti-corruption watchdog turned political party (PRISM) said that the meeting of the central committee of PRISM on Friday agreed to write a letter appealing to the house not to table the controversial Bill in its next session. The statement also said that the party would organize any form of agitation on Republic Day to demonstrate its opposition to the Bill.
