MALIGAON, OCTOBER 16 (MExN): In a significant development for railway infrastructure, Rangapara North station in Assam is being modernized with world-class amenities under the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme (ABSS). Located on the North Bank of the Brahmaputra River, the station is among 50 selected for redevelopment in the state, with an estimated investment of Rs 55.17 crores.
The revamp is part of a broader initiative by the Northeast Frontier Railway, which has identified a total of 92 stations for upgrades under the ABSS. The enhancements at Rangapara North aim to provide state-of-the-art facilities for railway commuters, a press release issued by CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma informed.
Built in 1903 by the Assam Railway Trading Company, Rangapara North is an important hub in Sonitpur district, located on the Rangapara–Murkongselek section. Current improvement works include modernizing the station's facade, constructing a new waiting hall, and enhancing the circulating area. Additional features will include toilet blocks, a second entry for better accessibility, and easily accessible water booths for differently-abled passengers.
To accommodate longer trains, platform extensions are underway, along with platform surfacing and shelter improvements. The station will also see the installation of three lifts for differently-abled and elderly passengers carrying heavy luggage. A new 12-meter-wide foot over bridge is being constructed to facilitate easy movement between platforms, the press release stated.
Historically, Rangapara North has played a vital role in supporting Assam's tea industry, serving as a key transportation hub for freight trains.
