Republic Day: AKM, CYF, ZSUN to abstain from participating

Dimapur, January 25 (MExN): The Ao Students' Conference (AKM), Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) and Zeliang Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) have asked their members abstain from participating in the upcoming 73rd Republic Day on January 26 in compliance with the directive issued by the Naga Students Federation (NSF).

The NSF on January 24 has directed Naga youth and the students’ community to refrain from taking part in the celebration to protest against the against the Armed Force (Special Power) Act, 1958.

In a notification the AKM directed all students, units and sub-ordinate bodies under AKM to abstain from the Republic Day Celebration 2022 in compliance to the directives of the NSF.

The CYF took the stance taking into consideration the directives issued by Chakhesang Students’ Union on January 24 and acting in accordance with the directives of the NSF, the front informed in a press release.  It further extended its unconditional support to the students’ community to express its dismay over the “unjustified command and orders” and the “indemnity of infamous AFSPA, 1958.”  

The AFSPA has achieved “nothing since its inception except terrorizing the innocent civilians and the so called ‘largest democracy in the world’ cannot have such Black Law against innocent and peace loving people,” it stated. 

Calling for immediate unconditional removal of the draconian Act, the CYF directed all its affiliated units to refrain from “inviting the Indian Armed Forces during any functions or receive any aid under their banner” until the demand for removal of AFSPA, 1958 is met. The directive is also issued to convey its indignation to the Oting massacre, it added. 

While lauding the efforts made so far, the CYF also appealed by the Government of Nagaland to promptly facilitate the immediate removal of AFSPA with utmost sincerity.

Meanwhile, in the compliance with the directive, ZSUN has also directed all the students and youths under its jurisdiction to abstain from celebrating the day. 

The union also appealed all federating and sub-federating unit to comply with the directive to register their resentment against the Armed Force (Special Power) Act, 1958.
