The increasing enrollment of girls in secondary education is contributing to better human development indicators in the state. This was stated in the Nagaland Economic Survey 2024-25, brought out by the Department of Economics & Statistics, Government of Nagaland.

With the implementation of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and the Right to Education Act 2009, gender parity in school enrolment is achieved at all levels.

In secondary and higher education, the female Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) notably surpassed the male GER for four consecutive years. (See Box)

The enrollment and retention rates of girls in schools and higher educational institutions are registering a positive trend in the state. Literacy rates among women have improved with various government and non-governmental initiatives focused on education.

Education is playing a crucial role in empowering and fostering the involvement of women in various developmental activities by improving women’s decision-making abilities, greater influence within households and better control over resources, the report stated.

Census of 2011 reflects a commendable advancement in female literacy with a significant increase by 14.6 percent over the past ten years.

Among the districts, while Mokokchung registered the highest female literacy rate of 91 percent, Mon district recorded the lowest female literacy rate of 57.6 percent.
