The Nagaland Assembly elections are done and over with, but after-effects of the brutally competitive democratic exercise is still being felt. On March 12, a video emerged on social media about a group of individuals in a village in Mokokchung purportedly engaging in a road-clearing exercise as punishment for opposing the village consensus candidate.
As told to The Morung Express, the incident occurred on March 10. The punishment was reportedly imposed by the village council on a number of individuals, who went against the council’s diktat. It could not be ascertained how many individuals faced the retribution. One of the individuals could be heard lamenting the lack of democracy in an election based on democratic principles.
In the lead up to the elections, the particular village saw two candidates bidding to contest. One got the support of the village council, which subsequently decreed the other to step aside to make way for its consensus candidate. The dispute landed in court and both the candidates went on to contest. The one who went against the village council’s diktat lost.
