With the lockdown in force in Meghalaya, the worst sufferers are the villagers who are unable to come to the city to either buy essential commodities or for medical emergencies.

After receiving complaints of various hardships faced by villagers under Mawryngkneng Block under East Khasi Hills district, the traditional heads of the area convened a meeting with legislators and MDCs of the area today.

Various speakers during the meeting complained that due to unavailability of passes, their movement becomes difficult especially during medical emergency.

The Sirdar of Mawryngkneng, Peter Lawai told reporters that the meeting discussed issues like issuance of car passes, the difficulty to get essential items and the problems faced by daily wage earners during the lockdown period.

After the meeting with representatives of the various constituencies falling under the area, it was resolved that the traditional heads, the MLAs and the MDCs will jointly approach the Deputy Commissioner of the district to issue special curfew passes without validity to the traditional heads.

“The police should allow passes issued by the dorbar shnongs for people in case of medical emergencies,” Lawai said.

The meeting also resolved to urge the district administration to supply essential commodities to respective blocks.

According to the Sirdar, what is happening at present is that the shop owners have to go and buy the essential commodities from wholesalers in Shillong.

“We can all see that there is no adherence to social distancing and after standing in the queue for hours the shops owners don’t get hold of all the supplies that they need,” Lawai said.

The meeting also resolved to urge the state government to extend the last date of April 8 for identification of beneficiaries under the Chief Minister’s Relief Against Wage Loss scheme for daily wage earners announced by the government on yesterday.

Under the scheme all wage earners, daily labourers and petty traders (unregistered daily wage earners) will get Rs 700 per week. The Sirdar informed that so far around 1000 such beneficiaries have been identified in Mawryngkneng.
