Department of Science and Technology is conducting different activities every year to create better understanding of climate change and global warming and create awareness amongst various target groups, where the participants are stimulated to pursue careers in science and technology, especially in the areas of climate change, meteorology, hazard management etc.
It aims to sensitize how individuals, groups and natural systems can prepare for and respond to changes in climate or their environment, according to the annual administrative report 2015-16 of the department tabled on the floor of the House on Friday by Parliamentary Secretary for Science and Technology Hukavi Zhimomi. The main objective of the programme is to ensure that “our” people are well sensitized with the message of “Climate change is real and it is happening and experiencing by us.”
The report stated that there will always be uncertainty in understanding a system as complex as the world’s climate. However, there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is occurring.
“It is likely that most of the climate change and global warming in recent decades can be attributed to human activities,” the report stated, adding that the impact of these shifts have an impact on all life-forms on our planet including their sources of food and water.
Current impacts that are already being observed are desertification, rising sea-levels as well as stronger extreme weather events like hurricanes and cyclones.
“It is everybody’s responsibility to adopt the habit of protecting the environment and eco-system,” the report stated.
