Sensitization on new vineyard grapes in non-traditional area in Nagaland

LUMAMI, AUGUST 11 (MExN): ICAR- All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Fruits, Medziphema Centre, Department of Horticulture, Nagaland University organised a sensitization programme on grapes cultivation in non-traditional area in collaboration with ICAR-NRC for Grapes, Pune on August 5. 

Dr Kaushik Banerjee, Director, ICAR NRC for Grapes, graced the occasion online and appreciated the AICRP on Fruits, Nagaland Centre for new initiatives of grape cultivation in Nagaland. 

Dr NA Deshmukh, Senior Scientist, ICARNRC for Grapes, encouraged the farmers to cultivate grapes in Nagaland and highlighted the opportunity of viticulture in hill ecosystem and assured in future collaboration. In his PowerPoint presentation, the scientist discussed the important steps to follow the calendar of operations, low cost protected cultivation and plant protection measures to improve the quality and productivity of grapes in Nagaland. 

Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist-cum-Head, ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek, briefed about wild grapes cultivation in the region. 

Quality planting materials of grape varieties were distributed to the participants. A total of 10 progressive farmers and 14 PhD scholars of horticulture, Nagaland University attended the training.

Later, saplings of grape varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Manjari Medika and Cabernet Sauvignon were distributed among the farmers and product of grape variety- Pusa Navrang was showcased during the programme by one young entrepreneur Sentiben for promotion of her start up.   Dr NA Deshmukh also visited the trellis system of grapes in instructional farm of Horticulture, Nagaland University.
