Should the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) be repealed by the Government of India?

Some of those who voted  YES had this to say:
•    Yes, if India is a real democracy than it should have repealed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act a long time ago. In fact it should never have been passed in the first place. The Indian Parliament introduced this Act to suppress the Nagas and look what it has led to. It has caused only more problems for India.
•    This draconian act has brought nothing but more killing. It is one of the most oppressive laws in the world and it is a shame that India till today has not been able to repeal this act. The whole world has already condemned this act and it must go.
•    Yes because they are disturbing the peaceful living of the people.
•    Very much. So long AFSPA is in place, India is making a mockery of her sons and daughters i.e., democracy in a broader context. This particular act nullifies all the fundamental rights of a democratic people/nation.
•    A BIG YES..! AFSPA Should b repeald / abolishd in d democratc country like India becoz in a democratc country, military rule doesn't run d Govt.'' NO FORCE SYSTEM''.. It was creatd in view of d increasing nationalism n insurgencs mainly: Northeastrn states n J&K so that it gives rights 2 d Army 2 use forces agnst d revolutionars / insurgencs whch in itself violates n demean d rights of democracy (India) n Human Rights as a whole. A democratc nation/constitution can't inacts n invades a community or a section of people through military might; 'how can part of India b democratc n part of she b communalism'???.. It seems India  Govt. have no options or rights politiclly as a democratc country 2 put undr their(Indian) constitution 2 those people n their land whch does not hstorically blongs 2 her (India), whch is why  they seems  2've apply AFSPA . Infct Indian should leave / d people n d land whch doesn't legally blong 2 thm, especially my Motherland; Kuknalim.
•    Yes, AFSPA should be repealed. This Act has failed to deal with insurgency and has only forced many young people to go underground because the Indian army has abused its powers so much that the public are just so angry at them.
•    Why is the government being so stubborn. Why cant they just repeal the Act. Majority of the people in the northeast want this Act to be done away with. It does not matter what Indians think, what matters is how people living under this Act think. It is clear the northeast region wants this act to be repealed by the government.
•    AFSPA is a draconian act which has to be enacted in a military state, and not in a democratic state.
•    Central govt should also listen to individual demand in democratic country like india
•    Like many other things, the Indian government inherited the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from their Colonial Masters - Great Britain. Now that India is a growing democracy, it will only be proper if this Act is repealed once and for all.
•    A post-dated-chaque, if any, which no bank of humane hearts accepts be it in main land or NE, then I am quite sure it's none but AFSPA. A time has come or may be it's late but GOI must wrap this inhuman Act without delay of even a day. Step taken by Irom sharmila is somewhat extreme but our being silent over the demand made by her is extremely unwanted.
•    It is against human rights, it destroys life.
•    This AFSPA should have no place at all in the 21st century. It is because of such repressive Acts that more and more young people are either turning to militancy in Jammu and Kashmir or to insurgency in the North East or to Naxalism in the Red Corridor. The AFSPA exposes the weakness in India's political ability to solve its own internal problem.
•    The Armed Forces Powers Act violates all sense of human decency and it goes against all democratic ethos. IT has brought misery to the Naga people ever since 1950s and till today it continues to destroy the Nagas. The younger generation may not have experienced the brutality of the Indian army in the 1950s and 60s, but if they were to ask their parents, they will hear first hand how much Nagas have suffered.
•    Barbaric law...need a more humane law where everyone, good and evil, have equal say to follow with
•    definitely.....it has brought nothing but pain and hardship to our society
•    Because its a draconian law which has no place n this modern age.
•    It is time for the government to honestly stare at the AFSPA and say enough is enough. How long will this madness continue. Cant the government of India hear the demands for the repeal of this most draconian act. Has the government become deaf, or is it plain indifference to the people of Nagaland and the northeast. This act violates every aspect of the Indian constitution. I don’t think the government of India has any moral authority till it repeals this act.
• This Armed Forces Special Powers Act clearly exposes that India is not a democracy. Its democracy is limited to the electoral process, but not in terms of its values and practices. What a great Shame!
• There is no room for such colonial acts in the present world order anymore. Of all the countries India should understand this.
• Unlike J&K where DDA is upto the committee constituted by the State govt to review and decide whether to lift DDA or not, and the central govt has no choice but to subsequently go by any decision made by the committee. Here in Nagaland, by contrast, inspite of hue and cry expressing by state govt, let alone the naga civil societies over the application and extension of DAA/AFSPA in the state pigheadedly imposed by GOI without paying heed to the views and ideas given by the state govt is appalling. Yes, we agree with PM Dr. M Singh that AFSPA needs to be replaced with more humane act where as of now UPA govt trying to build consensus in both houses of Parliament on this most inhumane act which the Indian parliament has ever passed into law in history. Thus it doesn’t require rockets science to take cognizance of what kind of yardstick Delhi does apply to NE states. Thanks to the ceasefire, if not, it’s the common people who will bear daily brunt to the savage hands of DAA/AFSPA.

Some of those who voted NO  had this to say:
•    Day by Day corruption increases and its becoming hard to survive without special forces in our daily lives. In order to have a peaceful situation I think AFSPA should not be repealed to the public.
•    No. Terrorist wil be dificult to handle. It shud stay till they are wipe out and make Nagaland a free Indian state.

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:

•    If India is serious about becoming a super power than it must really take into consideration the demand of the public who want to repeal the AFSPA. It is time for India to show that it can deal with political issues in a mature and diplomatic manner through negotiations. Until now, the Indian government has showed that it is nothing but a bully, who will turn to use its armed forces without hesitation.
•    Through this policy India is discriminating the people of Nagaland and it is only showing the world that it believes in military might.
•    Its strange why India is stubbornly refusing to repeal the AFSPA. Maybe its because of its pride that it is not willing to humble down and acknowledge that this Act is not only a draconian one but that it has failed to fulfill its objectives. Instead it has only sown seeds of fear and distaste for th e armed forces in Nagaland.
•    The Nagaland government has a role in this too. Since the AFSPA can come into play only after an area is declared as disturbed, the government of Nagaland must play its part to first withdraw the Disturbed Areas Act tag out of Nagaland. The Rio government cannot keep blaming the center on this, it was during Jamir’s time that the DDA was extended and now Rio must prove himself by removing the DDA out of Nagaland.
•    How long will India remind a political master in the northeast?
•    I think India is trying its best to keep its military presence in Nagaland and the northeast on full alert because of the China factor. There is no doubt that India fear’s China the most. India was badly defeated by China, and by the looks of it, this time if the war breaks out between India and China, the Northeast region will back China because the people of northeast are fed up with India’s policy to the northeast region.
