Showuba Memorial Volleyball Trophy kicks off in Shamator

The Showuba Memorial Open Volleyball Trophy, marking the 2nd Shamator District Volleyball Tournament, commenced at the Public Ground, Shamator, on Tuesday with participation from teams across the district.

Organised by the Shamator District Volleyball Association (SDVA), the tournament is being held in memory of Late Showuba, recognised for his contributions to the promotion of volleyball and community development in the area.

Advisor for Youth Resources & Sports, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, who attended the inaugural programme as special guest, lauded the organisers for creating a platform for rural talent and encouraged athletes to pursue sports with dedication and consistency.

He urged participants to move beyond being “seasonal players” and strive for professionalism through discipline, regular practice and sacrifice. Stressing the importance of holistic development, he said success in sports depends on moral and spiritual discipline alongside physical fitness and hygiene.

Earlier, the programme began with an invocation by Rev R Thsankiu, Pastor, Shamator Town Baptist Church. Delivering the welcome address, SDVA President K Yaksokiu Yimchunger highlighted that the tournament was dedicated to preserving the legacy of Late Showuba. He also acknowledged the support and sponsorship extended by the bereaved family and called upon players to uphold fair play, unity and mutual respect.

Short speeches were delivered by representatives of various organisations and officials, including J Kiumukam, Head GB of Yakor village and president of Shamator District Gaon Bura Associaiton, S Yansomong, Vice President of Yimkhiung Tribal Council, Mekato Aye, EAC Shamator, G P Singh, Commandant of 32 Assam Rifles and Yanba Showuba on behalf of the family.

Speaking on behalf of the sponsoring family, Yanba Showuba expressed gratitude for the support extended to the tournament and reiterated the family’s commitment to encouraging youth through sports.

During the programme, tribute was also paid to Late Showuba, remembered as a pioneer of Shamator town who served as Dobashi, Head Dobashi and later Head Gaon Bura.

The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Amongba Janger, affirming the commitment of players and officials to fairness and integrity in the competition.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Beri Janger and a benediction by Shophu, Pastor, Police Baptist Church Shamator.

The inaugural programme witnessed participation from officials, players and the public, reflecting growing interest in volleyball in Shamator district.
