Department of History at St Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima organised the 4th Janjatiya Gaurav Divas on November 20.

Chümoukedima, November 21 (MExN): The Department of History at St Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima organised the 4th Janjatiya Gaurav Divas on November 20. The event, held under the theme ‘Celebrating Tribal Heritage,’ marked the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
The programme was chaired by Litan L Phom, a first-semester postgraduate student, and began with an invocation prayer by Temsuchila, also from the PG first semester.In her welcome address, Prof Dr Avinuo Chupuo, Head of the Department of History, emphasized the importance of celebrating and commemorating Janjatiya Gaurav Divas. She highlighted the significant contributions of the tribal communities, particularly their pivotal role in India’s independence struggle. Prof Chupuo stressed how the tribal, often overlooked in mainstream narratives, played a crucial part in shaping the nation’s history.
The event featured a lively Sumi Naga folk dance performance by Alovito, Nahwang, Pezavilhu, Meyangsipong, Pedoilungyi, and Yanchumthung, which captivated the audience with its vibrant rhythms and cultural expression. A folk song ‘OisheIshou’ was performed by the students of the History department, which added to the cultural richness of the occasion.
Nyanbe Khuvung delivered the vote of thanks. The benediction prayer was led by S Dengoi, and the programme concluded with the St Joseph University Anthem.
The event was organised under the guidance of the ‘Heritage Club SJU’ coordinator, Dr Lanuchilla Changikiri, and K Hokato Sumi, Assistant Professor in Department of History.
