Social workers urged to remain committed to uplift the poor

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 19 (MExN): North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) successfully concluded its 3-day STAR program on January 19. The event featured Rev Deacon, Dr Sherman Kuek, OFS from the Christian Institute for Theological Engagement (CHRISTE), Malaysia as resource persons.

Dr Sherman Kuek began the session by shedding light on the collaborative efforts between CHRISTE and NEISSR. Emphasizing a broader purpose for education, he encouraged students not only to seek employment but also to transform their focus, thoughts, and education itself.

The keynote address delved into the 'Christian Perspective of Spirituality,' highlighting the responsible use of natural resources. Dr Sherman pointed out the global disparity where 20% of the population enjoys abundant resources while 80% remain deprived. He urged students to advocate for the rights of the underprivileged, drawing inspiration from the teachings of Jesus. Emphasizing humility, he encouraged social workers to remain committed to uplifting the poor, emphasizing that true transformation comes from understanding and embracing their struggles.

Further, Dr Sherman urged students to extend their influence by inspiring their peers to actively contribute to the betterment of society. He stressed the importance of education and seizing opportunities as a means to benefit the less fortunate.

Kishor Das, Regional Manager at DB Tech, discussed the dynamics of employer-employee relationships, providing valuable insights into this crucial aspect of professional life. Earlier in the program, Dr Toli H Kiba, Assistant Professor, and VizosuKikhi, Assistant Professor of NEISSR, briefed students on quality assurance of the institute, elucidating the assessment criteria for accreditation.

The program commenced with an invocation by Sr. Shaidaris Nongram BSW IV, followed by an engaging ice-breaking session conducted by Peace Channel staff. The STAR program not only provided a platform for valuable insights from esteemed speakers but also fostered an atmosphere of collaboration and skill development among the students of NEISSR.
