New speed limits of 30 km/h in Dimapur city and 50 km/h on highways
Dimapur, November 29 (MExN): Dimapur Police have introduced a set of measures aimed at curbing road accidents and improving public safety, citing over-speeding as a significant cause of mishaps in the district.
Beginning December 1, speed limits will be enforced along key routes for one month under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. The maximum speed has been capped at 50 km/h on stretches between Zion Hospital Junction and Chümoukedima, and from Chathe Bridge towards Assam and Niuland. Within the city limits of Dimapur, the speed limit is restricted to 30 km/h.
These measures, the police stated, are intended to ensure safer road conditions for all commuters. Violators of the speed limits will face strict penalties under Section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A press release from the Commissioner of Police reiterated the need for public cooperation and strict adherence to traffic rules to avoid accidents and ensure smooth vehicular movement.
In addition to the speed restrictions, Dimapur Police issued directives to promote responsible driving. All drivers and passengers are required to use seatbelts, and children under 14 years of age must travel with appropriate safety restraints. Helmets are mandatory for two-wheeler riders, and the use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited. The police also highlighted the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicants, urging citizens to avoid such practices.
The public has been reminded to park vehicles only at designated spots and follow parallel parking rules along the stretch from Purana Bazar to Chümoukedima. Parking in unauthorized zones or obstructing traffic will result in towing of vehicles.
Authorities also warned against unauthorized modifications to vehicles, such as tinted glasses, bull bars, beacon lights, or pressure horns, which will attract strict penalties. Additionally, unregistered vehicles found plying without temporary permits will be impounded.
The Commissioner assured that these regulations are being implemented with zero tolerance for violations. The police have appealed to all road users to comply with the rules, emphasizing that public safety and convenience are of paramount importance.
