The Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER), Delhi Police, organized the 78th Independence Day Badminton Tournament at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from August 8 to 9.
NEW DELHI, AUGUST 10 (MExN): The Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER), in alignment with the strategic directives outlined in the Standing Order and the 100-day action plan mandated by the Commissioner of Delhi Police, successfully organized the 78th Independence Day Badminton Tournament at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from August 8 to 9.
The event brought together 80 participants from the North Eastern States, Gorkhas of Darjeeling, and Ladakhis, fostering a sense of unity and oneness among these diverse communities residing in Delhi and NCR, a press release issued by PN Khrimey, Joint Commissioner of Police, SPUNER & SPUWAC, Delhi Police state.

The tournament was more than just a sports event; it served as a platform to connect individuals from these regions who are often scattered across different parts of the capital city. By bringing them together under one roof, SPUNER aimed to strengthen the ties between these communities, promote a feeling of oneness, and facilitate the sharing of experiences and building of lasting relationships, it said.
The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation, with Kadunguang Kamai and Thongam Thoithoiba Meitei emerging as the winners while the runners-up were R Lalduhawma and Vanlalawmpuia.
On the final day, the tournament was graced by the presence of several distinguished officers and leaders. Ajay Chaudhry, Special Commissioner of Police was the chief guest of the event. He was accompanied by PN Khrimey IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC/SPUNER, and Joram Maivio, Member of the Monitoring Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs.

In his address, Chaudhry emphasized the significance of such events in fostering unity and togetherness among these communities in Delhi. He highlighted SPUNER’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of these communities and reaffirmed the Delhi Police’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
Khrimey also spoke on the occasion, reiterating the importance of cultural and social integration. He stressed that events like these not only provide a platform for sporting excellence but also play a crucial role in bridging cultural gaps and building mutual respect and understanding among different communities.
Representing the players, Rocky Angumei, Pastor of Church of Hope, and Aphang, Assistant Professor at Maitreyi College, expressed their heartfelt thanks to SPUNER for organizing this event.
In their speech, they acknowledged the importance of such initiatives in providing a platform for community members to come together, connect, and celebrate their shared identity. They also emphasized the positive impact of these events in fostering a sense of belonging and unity among the participants.
