The Tattered ruins of Tuli Paper Mill

The infamous ruins of the Tuli Paper Mill located at Tzudikong town, Mokokchung. It was the first and only medium and large industry in the state and was known as the pride of Nagaland. Incorporated in the year 1971, the mill first began commercial production in1982 but ceased after only 10 years of use. It was later referred to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) as a ‘sick’ unit.  The site has also attracted robbers and scavengers over the years, looking to steal equipments and other machineries for scrap.

The Tuli Paper Mill or Nagaland Pulp & Paper Company Limited (NPPCL) was a joint venture between Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL), a Government of India (GoI) Enterprise, which is now defunct, and the Government of Nagaland.

Several futile attempts were made to revive the factory in the past with no clear results. Workers of the mill had issued statements for the non-payment of their salaries and pensions for over 5 years last year which has still not materialised.
The mill is located at an area of 700 acres of land which also includes housing quarters and bamboo plantation as well. Its tattered ruins serve a remainder to the people of the lost opportunities and possibilities that could have been utilized for the economic development of the state and region. (Morung Photo)
