PHEK, SEPTEMBER 28 (MExN): Commissioner & Secretary, Tourism, Kovi Meyase, has called for greater focus on rural tourism, highlighting the potential of digital technology and artificial intelligence to expand tourism opportunities for rural communities.
Meyase was speaking at the World Tourism Day 2026 celebration held at SHHSS, Chizami village, Phek on September 27. Speaking on this year’s theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” Meyase highlighted the role of emerging technologies in reshaping the tourism sector.
He said rural areas possess tourism potential because of their culture, traditions, landscapes, indigenous knowledge and community-based practices. According to Meyase, digital platforms and artificial intelligence can help rural destinations gain wider visibility, connect with larger markets and create new opportunities for local communities.
He encouraged communities to adapt to the changing digital tourism landscape. During the programme, Meyase announced the declaration of Zhavame village in Phek as a “Digital Tourism Village.”
Cultural presentations and folk songs by the Chizami Students Union and Meselumi Students Union were among the highlights of the programme. The event was organised by the Tourism Department, Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with the Chizami Range Students’ Union.
