Traffic Control Unit conducts surprise checks in Wokha

The Traffic Control Unit, Wokha, conducted surprise checks in Wokha town on September 30 as part of its enforcement drive against traffic violations, particularly helmet violations and illegal parking.

During the checking, several two-wheeler riders were found travelling without helmets, while some were also found carrying passengers beyond the permitted limit. Vehicles parked in restricted areas were clamped by the traffic personnel.

Speaking to media, Traffic In-charge N Eyingo Lotha said the enforcement drive was being carried out despite repeated awareness programmes and warnings to motorists.

He said first-time offenders were being fined Rs 1,000 and issued warnings, while repeat offenders could face stricter action under the relevant provisions of law, including imprisonment.

Lotha also cautioned parents and those involved in transporting school children against carrying more passengers than permitted on two-wheelers, stressing that such practices could put the lives of children at risk.

He further raised concern over obstructions along the National Highway passing through Wokha town. According to him, construction materials left along roadsides and vehicles parked improperly continue to affect the smooth movement of traffic.

He said a joint inspection by the district administration, police and traffic department had earlier directed those responsible to remove such obstructions. If the directives are not followed, the authorities may take enforcement action to clear the roads, he added.

The Traffic In-charge also said clamps were being used against vehicles found parked in restricted areas to discourage violations and improve traffic movement in the town.

Lotha further appealed to the public to follow traffic rules and remain vigilant, particularly concerning underage driving. He reminded that driving by minors is a punishable offence and warned that violators would face action under the law.
