Training on ‘post-harvest management of Turmeric’ held in Ruzaphema village

Ruzaphema, June 22 (MExN): Department of Agriculture, Medziphema Sub-Division conducted training cum field visit programme at Ruzaphema village on June 18 on the topic ‘post-harvest management of Turmeric’ under MOVCD-NER Phase-II.


A press release stated that Rosemary Ezung, SDAO, the resource person, introduced Turmeric (Cucurma longa L) as an important commercial spice crop of India used in diversified forms as a condiment, flavoring agent and as a principal ingredient in Indian dishes as curry powder. 


She elaborated in details of different post-harvest operations like harvesting at right maturity stage, grading, preservation of seed, processing, certification and marketing of organic turmeric.


She also encouraged the rural youth to take up farming as this is the most secure and satisfying job. With the rising unemployment in the state, she challenged the unemployed youth that, instead of wasting their precious time, young people can take up agriculture as career option and cultivate large area of land taking advantages of technological advancements and become producers of food for the future. 


The training was chaired by Nungsangmongba, Agriculture Inspector. The programme was followed by field visit to the organic turmeric farms being cultivated under MOVCD-NER at Ruzaphema village.
