Nagaland witnessed a significant decline in road accidents in 2024, with the number of reported cases dropping to 194 compared to 316 in 2023 — a decrease of approximately 38.6% — according to a new report by the Transport Department.
The report, based on data from the Police Department, also revealed a steady decrease in road mishaps over the past five years.
While 923 accidents were recorded in 2021, the figure fell to 710 in 2022, 316 in 2023, and 194 in 2024, marking an overall 79% drop since 2021, revealed the data given in the Administrative Report Annual Administrative Report 2024 – 2025 of the Transport Department Nagaland.
Fatalities, however, showed a mixed trend.
The number of deaths peaked at 84 in 2023 but dropped to 67 in 2024 — a 20% decline. Injuries also reduced from 326 in 2023 to 223 in 2024, reflecting a 31.6% decrease.
It is unclear whether the data reflects only officially registered cases with the police or includes all accidents.
According to the Transport Department, the decline can be attributed to extensive road safety campaigns, the collaborative efforts of the Nagaland Road Safety Authority, the District Road Safety Committees, and the Police Department’s grassroots interventions.
The Motor Vehicles Department, designated as the lead agency for road safety in Nagaland, has been actively engaged in awareness campaigns, seminars, and workshops, it noted.
Strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act and driving tests have also contributed to reducing accidents, it maintained.
As part of its long-term plan, the report said that the Department aims to achieve ‘Vision Zero: Zero Accidents, Zero Fatalities’ within the next five years.
Efforts include establishing Driving Training Centres across the state, automated driving test tracks, and collaborating with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH).
Further, the National Road Safety Month are observed annually from January 15 to February 14, with a range of activities — from enforcement drives and essay competitions to awareness campaigns targeting drivers, students, and pedestrians, it added.
The Department also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety infrastructure and encouraging responsible road use.
