‘A Treatise on Customary and Fundamental Laws of the Nagas in Nagaland’ book released

Dimapur, September 19 (MExN): The North East Centre (NEC), New Delhi hosted the launch of Dr. Moatoshi Ao’s book “A Treatise on Customary and Fundamental Laws of the Nagas in Nagaland” published by Notion Press at the India International Centre, New Delhi on September 18.

“The book is an in-depth study of practiced legal pluralism in the State of Nagaland. It begins with a legal investigation on the history of the Naga customary law and its Constitutional recognition. It delves into the Naga customary administrative and judicial authorities and the legitimacy of its actions in the eye of statutory laws,” stated Dr. Rasal Singh, Kendra Pramukh, North East Centre, Delhi in a press release.

The book also reflects on the contemporary social and legal issues in the State and the reconciliation of such issues. The book is thus a legal work on the efficacy of Naga customary law in governance and administration of justice.

Dr. Surender S. Ghonkrokta IAS (Retd), President of NEC, Dr. Aashish Bhave, Secretary, NEC and Dr. Rasal Singh, Kendra Pramukh, NEC welcomed the guests.
RN Ravi, Governor of Nagaland speaking as the chief guest gave a brief account on the constitution of the NEC Delhi. He also emphasized on the uniqueness of the customary law in Nagaland is that it has Constitutional recognition.

The event was also graced by Prof. Yogesh K Tyagi, Vice Chancellor of Delhi University and Shri Vikramjit Banerjee, Additional Solicitor General of India as Guest of Honour. Prof. Tyagi addressing the gathering stressed on the importance of customary law and also urged on the documentation of customary laws.

Banerjee, who was also the former Advocate General of the State of Nagaland was elated that the book is one of its first kind that focused on the legal aspect of the Naga customary law.

The event concluded with vote of thanks by Ravindra Lokhande, Additional Advocate General of the State of Arunachal Pradesh. Valentina Brahma was the master of ceremony. Dr. Deepika Singh, Dr. Soniya and Dr. Saroj Kr Rath played important role in organizing this program.

“As the book rightly focuses on the different customary laws and cultural aspect of the Nagas in Nagaland, the NEC strives towards bringing together the like mind set representing the ethnicity and diversity of the NE region,” Dr Singh added.
