The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, has rescheduled the date for the next round of ‘tripartite talk’ on the district creation to January 28. According to the ‘meeting notice’ issued to the United Naga Council (UNC) by the MHA, the latter has decided to reschedule the talk date following the “request” from the Manipur Government. However, the venue of the talk remains the same.
Earlier, the next round of tripartite talk was fixed for January 25, 2019.
This January 28, 2019 talk will be the first round of tripartite talk on the issue with the new team of UNC headed by S Kho John.
The last round of talk was held on September 1, 2018 in Senapati district headquarters. In that round of talk, the participating parties had decided to have the next round of talk in the first week of December, 2018. However, till date there is no development in this regard.
On December 11, the UNC had expressed its concern as the Government had remained silence on the next round of tripartite talk over the district creation issue.
A letter was written to Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (NE), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), by the UNC. In the letter, the UNC had reminded Satyendra Garg about the next round of talk slated to be held in the first week of December, 2018.
It is worth noting here that, the previous Government of Manipur had created seven new districts on December 8, 2016. In protest against that act of the Manipur Government, the UNC had imposed 139 days of economic blockade along the national highways which pass through Manipur. After the lifting of the blockade, the first round of talk was held on March 19, 2017 followed by several rounds of talk. The talk is still continuing on the issue.
