The 23rd Dr. T. Ao Inter-District Championships kicked off with an impressive display of football as Tuensang defeated Kiphire 10-0 in the opening match held at the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground. The victory set an exciting tone for the tournament, which features teams from across Nagaland.
The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, inaugurated the prestigious tournament today. In his address, Rio praised the organizing committee and the Tuensang District Football Federation for their role in hosting the event. He highlighted that the Trophy is named in honor of Dr. T. Ao, a revered figure in Indian football and the captain of the Indian team at the 1948 London Olympics. Dr. Ao, known for his remarkable skills, played for the Mohun Bagan Club and attracted attention from European football clubs.
Rio encouraged the youth to follow Dr. Ao’s legacy and emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure across all districts. He applauded the Department of Youth Resources & Sports for its efforts in supporting the aspirations of the youth in sports and music. Announcing 2024 as the Year of Youth Empowerment, Rio stressed Nagaland’s potential in sports and the achievements of local athletes, including Hokato Hotozhe Sema’s bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympics.
The Chief Minister also promised improvements to the Loyem Memorial Ground, including new galleries, a security wall, and better electrification. He assured continued support for female athletes and sports development in the state.
The inauguration included speeches from Lima Onen, MLA & Convener of the Planning Committee; K. Neibou Sekhose, President of the Nagaland Football Association; and A. Keoshu Yimkhiung, MLA & Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports.
The event was attended by C. L John, Minister of Forest, Environment & Climate Change; P. Bashangmongba Chang, Minister of Housing and Mechanical Engineering; Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor of Agriculture; MLA Benei Lamthui; MLA Imtichoba; and other dignitaries.
