DIMAPUR, JUNE 8 (MExN): The Tuensang Police today issued a statement refuting allegations that its personnel had “assaulted and detained” a Marine Commando of the Indian Navy for possessing a “single bottle of rum.”
A press note from the Tuensang SP said that one MB Akhang, a Marine Commando of the Indian Navy serving in Andaman Nicobar had circulated a message on social media with the allegations, which subsequently went viral.
The SP clarified that on May 15, during motor vehicle checking at 1st nallah (Yongpong sector) Tuensang in the run-up to the LS Bye-Election, a Sumo Tata coming from Dimapur was checked and frisked at 7:00pm. One case MC Rum (IMFL) was found in the vehicle. During enquiry it was found that the case belonged to MB Akhang Chang, police said.
“On further enquiry he was asked to produce leave command certificate but he failed to produce anything else except his service ID card. Though he is from defense personnel, there was no document authorizing him to possess any liquor,” the Tuensang Police added.
Despite the non-possession of valid documents, the police party, “in good faith” did not seize the Case of rum “considering that he is defense personnel as he said he was going to use in marriage party.”
Police added that the allegations made by MB Akhang are “totally false.” “The police party never assaulted nor acted any inhuman behaviour against any occupants in the vehicle. If he really feels that he and his family were assaulted and treated inhumanly, he could have come and approached the senior officers of the unit in time when he was in Tuensang,” Police added.
It further clarified that the incident occurred on May 15 and not on May 30 as alleged.
