Altogether 87 candidates under 26 municipal and town councils will be elected unopposed if the Urban Local Bodies election to be held on February 1, 2017 takes place as per schedule. Out of this, 57 are male and 30 female candidates.
Statistics prepared by the State Election Commission (SEC) on the list of candidates and wards for the ULBs election indicated that there are 87 wards with unopposed candidates while there are vacant four wards from Tuli and Phek town council after candidates withdrew nomination.
In three town councils- Chumukedima, Mangkolemba and Chozuba, election remains annulled as all candidates withdrew their nominations on the deadline given by the Commission.
The total number of candidates to contest for the election stand at 314, while 141 wards out of the 232 wards from 26 municipal and town councils would be holding election in 235 polling stations.
Overall, there were 401 valid candidates remaining for the municipal and town council election after the ending of the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers. This includes 87 unopposed and 314 contesting candidates. Out of these, 263 are men and 138 women.
The Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) appears to be heading to a massive win judging by the number of candidates fielded by the party, which rose to three digits of 153 candidates, both unopposed, and contesting. Other political parties including the BJP and Congress and Independent had candidates only in double digits.
From Tuli town council, NPF candidates emerged unopposed from 8 wards out of the total nine wards. Similarly, in Phek town council, out of the 11 wards, 8 wards have been unopposed with NPF candidates dominating the town council. The remaining three wards are vacant after candidates withdrew nominations.
From Dimapur, despite the opposition from the Naga Council Dimapur and tribal bodies, 43 candidates are in the fray to contest from 17 wards out of the total 23 wards. The remaining six wards have unopposed candidates.
With 5 (five) candidates each- Ward-11 from Dimapur municipal council and ward-4 from Longkhim town council has the highest number of candidates contesting from a single ward, the SEC statistics revealed. There are 4 Independent and 1 NPF from ward-5 Dimapur and 3 Independent, 1 BJP and 1 NPF which include two women from ward-4 in Longkhim.
Disciplinary action against govt servants going against ULB polls: DC Dimapur
The Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur on Thursday brought to the notice of all government appointed individuals and organizations that the conduct of ULB elections is a decision of the government and every government agent and government servant should abide by the government policy.
A press communiqué from the DC Dimapur has warned that any government servant or agent/GB/DB found indulging against the policy of the government and participating in activities of opposition to the conduct of the ULB polls shall be dealt with as per relevant rules and provisions of disciplinary proceedings prescribed for government servants.
ULB election should be held after wider consultation: NSCA
The Nagaland Senior Citizens Association (NSCA) on Thursday observed that the forthcoming ULB election should be held only after wider consultation.
“Considering the gravity of the matter and nature of the case, the NSCA feel it necessary that ULB election should be held after wider consultation,” a press statement from the Association read.
The Association also felt that the ongoing international boundary construction between Nagaland and Myanmar should be stopped immediately and be constructed after proper consultation of the area and consent of the inhabitants.
Phek Town still under curfew
DIMAPUR, JANUARY 19 (MExN): Section 144 of CrPc continues to be in force in Phek town, following the vandalism witnessed on January 17, wherein property and houses of the three intending candidates to the town council elections 2017 were wrecked.
A press note from the EAC, Phek informed that Mobile services data connection has also been suspended in the town in the wake of the prevailing situation. While the Deputy Commissioner of Phek had given relaxation of few hours in order to let the public of the town procure the essential commodities, all shops and business establishments in the town closed their shutters on January 18 and 19.
District administration, police & para military forces have been deployed round the clock to ensure peace in the town. The Deputy Commissioner has said that sec 144 CrPC will be in force till further orders. He further appealed to the people of Phek town to comply and cooperate with the order in the larger interest of the town and its people.
