The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a 48-hour total bandh across its jurisdiction, set to commence at midnight on October 3. The decision aims to express their discontent and demand the immediate rollback of the creation of seven new districts in Manipur, which the council deems arbitrary.

In a statement issued this evening to Newmai News Network, the UNC clarified that an ultimatum had been set for addressing the grievances related to the formation of these districts, which were established on December 8, 2016. The council highlighted the importance of the standing four Memoranda of Understanding between the Government of Manipur and the Naga people, along with assurances from the Government of India and various rounds of tripartite talks among stakeholders.

The UNC criticized the creation of the new districts, claiming it was executed without the informed consent of stakeholders and in violation of previous agreements. This decision, made during the Congress regime, resulted in significant unrest, including a massive protest, hartals, and a 139-day economic blockade along national highways in the state. The council noted that there had been ten rounds of talks involving the Government of Manipur, the UNC, and the Government of India, with the last discussion occurring on March 9, 2019. The UNC stated that the government of Manipur had assured a concrete proposal would be presented in the next round of talks, which was expected to occur in late July 2019.

Reiterating their position against what they described as "the arbitrary, undemocratic, and divisive declaration" of the new districts, the UNC stated that any decisions or rulings passed by any institution or authority concerning this matter are rejected.
The council emphasized that the Naga people favor dialogue and have repeatedly appealed for a resolution through discussions. However, with no substantial response to their pleas, the Naga people have resolved to proceed with the bandh to express their resentment and demand the immediate rollback of the new districts.

During the bandh, essential services, media, and emergency cases will be exempted. The UNC urged the entire Naga populace to cooperate in this initiative.
