Investigation initiated, says the paramilitary force
Kohima, August 11 (MExN): The Assam Rifles today termed the incident involving one of its soldiers and the President of the Angami Students' Union (ASU) on August 9 in Kohima as “unfortunate” and informed that it is investigating the incident.
A press release from the IGAR (N) stated that as per preliminary investigations, the soldier, while on sentry duty, noticed a car parked on the road in close proximity to the Assam Rifles Camp.
Given the heightened security ahead of the Independence Day, the sentry who was oblivious to the identity of the driver, approached the vehicle, it clarified.
Subsequently, an argument ensued between the soldier and the ASU president regarding the vehicle's parking in a restricted area, it added.
Accordingly, the paramilitary force assured the people of Kohima that the regrettable incident has been taken “cognisance of” and the Assam Rifles has already initiated an investigation into the incident.
The Assam Rifles is actively engaging with the Civil Administration, Angami Public Organization (APO), Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), and ASU on this issue, the release added.
On August 9, the ASU accused the Assam Rifles of allegedly assaulting its president around 12:30 pm along the road passing the Assam Rifles camp at D Block colony below DC office, Kohima.
Maintaining that its president was assaulted “within the Assam Rifles camp without provocation,” the ASU had given IGAR North a 48-hour deadline to identify and take appropriate action against the jawan responsible and also demanded , "unconditional apology” in the public domain.
