Come April 5, a conglomeration of various Churches in Nagaland, music schools and musical artistes will come together, in hope and prayer for a united Nagaland. ‘Handel’s Messiah,’ a Worship concert celebrating Oneness in Christ, will aim to fill hearts with God’s love, inspiration and encouragement through the immortal and spiritual power of choral masterpiece Messiah by George Frideric Handel. An exciting concert, which will certainly be the most power-packed event of 2014!
Creating a ‘Master Ensemble’ for the first time in Nagaland, the artistes featured are Rubin Lukito (Tenor) from Indonesia, Judy Tay (Viola) from Singapore, Lydia Wong (Viola) from Singapore, and Nagaland’s musical powerhouse Margaret Shishak. The ensemble will also include professional musicians from all over Nagaland State.
This event is also an exceptional one, as it will not be the standard worship concerto. It is in fact the first ever western classical music concert played by a full sized Orchestra.
For several months now, the organizing team along with 300 and more musicians have been singing, breathing, and living ‘Handel’s Messiah.’ Hours of rehearsals have built a deep sense of bonding and genuine friendships have formed between the musicians, organizing committee and the production team. A heart-warming incident was narrated of how an old woman ran towards one of the organizers, clutching in her hands her contribution towards the event fund. This is just the first chapter towards the ‘Unified Nagaland,’ envisioned through the concert.
Representing a nine member organising Committee of the event, Pastor Razo Vasa, and Zubeno Mozhui shared important information and details on the set-up of the Worship Concert. Clearly enthusiastic about the event, they pointed out that ‘Handel’s Messiah’ is one of the most widely performed and best loved classical music oratorios to this day, and is a favourite for all Naga musicians as well.
For Pastor Razo, the excitement is more about the huge medley of Churches and musicians coming together under one roof. He highlights the grave importance for Churches and its members to come together. He underlines the fact that it is very crucial for Naga people from all the tribes to unite. His main concern is for Nagas to be able “to rise up together and identify the true evil persisting in our society”.
Pastor Razo feels that Nagas are blessed abundantly in the gift of music and should use the gift positively for the glory of God. Commenting on the rehearsals underway for the event, he said, “There is so much joy in planning together. This is a small but significant step”.
With the concert arranged as free entry for all, it still requires huge expenditure. Together with assistance from the North East Zone Cultural Centre, several churches, well-wishers and many others have come forth and donated willingly, but the target remains to be achieved.
